not WHAT is your favorite music...when!
it occurred to me (Dann) while tossing and turning at 4am, wondering if I should try to get back to sleep or just get up for the day (spoiler alert: I'm writing this at 5:20 after a lot of thought) why people's favorite songs are their favorite songs.
And one of the answers that I came up with is the emotional connection, usually to a moment in their life. Was it an amazing kiss? a breakup? a wedding? coming out? a trip somewhere? an event with their children? It explains the depth and breadth of both classic rock stations, XM satellite channels like "the 90s on 9," and the fact that the new-fangled AAA (Adult Album Alternative) stations can easily mix Mumford & Sons with Nirvana Unplugged.
I'm thinking, for me, the years 1994 and 2012 are incredibly relevant to answering this question. In 1994, I graduated high school, got a scholarship to college, and my personal life was in turmoil. In 2012, I won a grant to study in Spain, played a whole bunch of really good shows, and my personal life was in turmoil.
For me, the emotional rollercoaster (if you want to call it that) brought an incredible and visceral love for Pearl Jam, Green Day, Counting Crows, and Frank Turner (probably in close to that order - chronologically).
